San Antonio, Texas – Texas A&M University-San Antonio is currently conducting an investigation into Christina Gomez, a former HR manager, for allegedly misusing a university purchasing card racking up over $70,000 in potentially fraudulent charges. Gomez resigned effective March 31, 2025, following her placement on administrative leave by the university’s leadership as the investigation progressed.
The internal review conducted by the Texas A&M University System’s chief auditor uncovered that between October 2023 and February 2025, Gomez made a total of 211 questionable transactions with the purchasing card. The total amount of these charges was determined to be $70,135. Notably, $6,950 of this amount related to charges lacking receipts remains under review.
The charged purchases occurred primarily at several locations, including H-E-B stores in San Antonio and College Station, along with various Walmart stores in San Antonio, Helotes, College Station, and Corpus Christi. While no individual transaction exceeded $500.89, three separate purchases were made at Walmart on the same day in July 2024.
The auditor’s findings revealed that Gomez admitted to including personal expenses in her university expense reports. Rather than submitting valid receipts for her transactions, she reportedly utilized a coworker’s digital signature on lost receipt forms without their consent. Additionally, she accessed a coworker’s login credentials to authorize her own expense reports, leading to a breach of cluster guidelines and university policies.
As per the audit’s outcomes, Gomez’s actions violated several university regulations that govern the use of system resources, information security, IT standards, and procurement card usage. The review identified two additional employees associated with A&M-San Antonio who were implicated, with their identities redacted from official documents. One of these employees was found to have breached information security regulations, though it remains unclear whether disciplinary action has been taken against them.
The university administration has stressed its commitment to upholding high integrity standards within its community and indicated that serious actions are taken when potential policy violations are brought to their attention. In light of the findings, A&M-San Antonio President Dr. Salvador Hector Ochoa announced the establishment of nine corrective measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future, including rendering Gomez ineligible for rehire.
The matter has been referred to the university’s police department immediately following the resignation of Gomez on March 31, 2025. Although Gomez has not yet faced criminal charges, she is reportedly under investigation for forgery and credit card abuse. Initial inquiries directed to local law enforcement agencies like the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office have not yielded any records related to the investigation in their systems.
A former detective has pointed out that given the complexity of the case, it might be necessary for a larger law enforcement agency to take over the investigation. Meanwhile, the A&M-San Antonio police have refrained from offering further details about the ongoing inquiry, deferring any requests for updates to the university’s communications department.
This situation raises concerns regarding the management of university financial resources and highlights the importance of compliance with regulations designed to ensure integrity and accountability in administrative operations.
